Understanding how important cooking and hosting parties were to the owners, the design team created an easy passage between the kitchen and dining-living area to facilitate the comfortable accommodation of large numbers of people while retaining a sense of intimacy. In a break from tradition, the living room and dining room are one and the same. "We didn't want a typical Carmel house with the dining room over here, the living room over there," explains the owner. "We love to entertain and we wanted to use the dining room." A cleverly situated wet bar provides a transition between the vaulted dining- living room and the expansive kitchen, with a pass-through that further emphasizes the unity of the two spaces. "We wanted to bring the bar and the entertaining for the adults upstairs," she continues. e kitchen itself has several focal points, most notably a gargantuan quartz island with ample seating along one side for at least five. e quartz is repeated in a countertop-to-ceiling backsplash that provides the perfect backdrop for the clean lines of the statement-making range hood. To the rear of the kitchen, a capacious pantry not only provides perfect storage for baking materials, but with its mirrored tile also serves as a showcase for the couple's eclectic and colorful collection of stemware. "And when I was talking to Linda," says the wife, "I told her I wanted black and mirrored and funky, unlike any other part of the house." Around the corner in a discreet cabinet are a few dozen bottles of some of the world's most sought-after and potent hot sauces. "e children aren't allowed anywhere near this unless it says Tabasco," the wife half jokes. "My husband had to sign a waiver to get one of these sauces, it's so hot." e pantry to the rear of the kitchen provides ample space for the wife's baking supplies and colorful glassware. slmag.net 69
