Next day, after a quick swim and breakfast on the terrace, Jen and I headed into town for a spot of shopping before picking up a rental Mini Cooper to head westward to Château d'Esclans, an estate that almost single-handedly put rosé on the map after decades of neglect and ridicule by all but the most knowledgeable of wine drinkers. It is hard to overestimate the impact that their principal label, Whispering Angel, has had on the appreciation of rosé, particularly in the United States. e brainchild of Sacha Lichine and the great (and sadly late) oenologist Patrick Léon, Château d'Esclans is situated in La Motte in the heart of Provence, about an hour due west of Cannes. Here we were treated to an exclusive tour of the spectacular formal gardens and the state-of- the-art winery, as well as a tasting of the entire lineup of wines with Tom Schreckinger, the estate's director of communications. Several weeks before our visit, our friends at Château d'Esclans had suggested we might wish to make dinner reservations at Chez Bruno, a nearby restaurant that has built its reputation on its chef-owner's obsession with truffles. Jen and I followed their advice, and that evening sat down for a seven-course truffle menu, an experience that, along with the thoughtfully matched wines, completely recalibrated my appreciation of the elusive tuber. Quite simply, this was one of the greatest meals of my life. e following morning, back at the hotel, we enjoyed a traditional French breakfast of strong coffee and croissants (yes, I dunked!) al fresco. Without my even asking, a perfectly pulled Americano arrived at the table, and we were greeted by name. I was enjoying our stay at Hôtel La Pérouse more with each passing day, and the breakfast made a wonderful start to a day of shopping and sightseeing.
