Kevin Kinder of Indy Craft Painting painted the entire home, and created the custom damask wallpaper that adorns the hallway and staircase. Upon close inspection, the pattern derives from words, a tribute to the couple's publishing industry background. In the downstairs bathroom, Kinder copied a fiberglass tea tray that's been in the family since the 1950s; in the breakfast room, the wallpaper is bright and jazzy in lively contrast to the 1920s cabinetry. Elsewhere around the house, the couple's idiosyncratic taste in art makes equally bold statements — works by local artists Kyle Ragsdale, Barry Lantz, Gayla Hodson and Walter Knabe proudly occupy spaces of honor. Outside, the renovations continue. "When we bought the house, we didn't even know we had much of a backyard," the wife said. With a veritable jungle both front and back, it fell to Brian Jones of Scenic Green to carve a yard out of the chaos. e couple then turned to Chad Bruick of Outdoor Environments Group with the goal of creating a space where friends and neighbors could congregate. In addition to the standard backyard grill and dining table, they asked Bruick to also envision the front of the home as a gathering space. "We created a round terrace in the front lawn that reflects the curved lines of the home's architecture," the designer described. "e terrace's interaction with the neighborhood walkway engages people and creates a community atmosphere." Mission accomplished. In the course of a 30-minute chat over coffee on the new terrace, we were greeted by six separate neighbors and two dogs. A gregarious host with a love of entertaining, the husband is delighted with the new outdoor living area. Arched doorways lead from the entry hall into the living room and kitchen; an old rotary phone tucked into the recessed nook adds a cute retro detail. 74
