Offering a relaxed, family-friendly environment in which to enjoy a pizza and a glass of wine, the Nook by Northside occupies the Broad Ripple spot that was previously home to Village Cigar, the latest addition to a reputable local restaurant family that includes the Northside Social, Northside Kitchenette, Delicia and La Mulita. While retaining the former establishment's sealed concrete floors and a bar fashioned from weathered Amish barn wood, the Nook has managed to transform the space from a shadowy island hideaway at sunset into a vibrant, sunshine- drenched retreat more reminiscent of a California beach house at daybreak. Indianapolis is certainly no stranger to pizza, but it wasn't until quite recently that anything resembling the genuine Neapolitan-style article became available in these parts. e Nook owners' decision to turn the former cigar bar into a pizzeria wasn't a difficult one, says partner Nicole Harlan-Oprisu. "We all love pizza and wine; it was as simple as that," she explained. With successful gourmet pizzerias popping up around town in recent years, Nicole and her business partners Bill Ficca and Tim Oprisu decided to explore a slightly different angle at their repurposed location — a pizza with a robust crust to provide a chewier, more substantial foundation for a slate of creative toppings devised by Chef Dean Sample. "We buy the best quality ingredients for everything we make," said Chef Sample. "We really put a lot of time and conversation into what we as a team love about pizzas — what kind of dough, cheese and sauce, and the ratio of the three. We also pride ourselves in creating a American-style pizza that uses great ingredients, which I feel really sets us apart." In addition to providing a quality product, pleasing the hometown crowd is also a top priority. Written by Neil Charles / Photography by Andrew Kung IN THE NOOK Great pizza finds a Northside home 86
